Dallas is a sprawling metropolis with a population exceeding 1.3 million. While not the largest city in the United States by population or area, Dallas still falls within the top ten largest cities in America. The city’s size is reflected not only in square miles and population but also in the amount of crime reported annually.
In 2024, the Dallas Police Department (DPD) received nearly 98,000 reports of criminal activity, including approximately 26,000 crimes against persons. These crimes were spread out across the DPD’s seven patrol districts, but not equally. Some parts of the city experienced considerably more crime than others, and knowing this is crucial to staying safe in town.
The 7 Patrol Districts Ranked For Safety
The seven patrol districts utilized by DPD include the following:
- Central
- North Central
- Northwest
- Northeast
- Southeast
- South Central
- Southwest
Each of these patrol divisions encompasses several different neighborhoods. Those divisions with the lowest numbers of reported crimes in 2024 include:
1. North Central Division
The North Central Division had the lowest number of crimes reported in 2024. Only 9,879 criminal reports were received. The North Central Division includes the Central Expressway, Park Cities, Lover’s Lane, and Chapel. This division ends at Plano.
2. South Central Division
The South Central Division begins just south of downtown and extends as far south as Lancaster and Desoto. Its boundaries include the area around the Dallas Zoo. As of December 23, 2024, approximately 12,839 crimes of all types had been reported in this area, the second-lowest number of crimes among the seven patrol districts.
3. Southeast Division
Take South Second Avenue southeast away from downtown, and you will be traveling through the heart of the Southeast Division. Rochester Park lies within the Southeast Division’s boundaries, which extend as far out as Mesquite. So far this year, 13,444 crimes have been reported in this division.
4. Northwest Division
The Northwest Division includes the Asian Trade District, Market Center, and the Design District. The whole division covers approximately 50 square miles and is home to about 175,000 people. Approximately 14,478 crimes occurred during 2024, including crimes against persons like assault and crimes against property.
5. Southwest Division
The Southwest Division of the Dallas Police Department services Cockrell Hill and Mountain Creek Lake Park. As of December 23, 2024, 15,360 criminal reports for property crimes and crimes against society and others had been received, the third-highest number among the seven divisions.
6. Northeast Division
Close behind the Southwest Division is the Northeast Division, with its 15,832 criminal reports. This part of Dallas is experiencing population growth, which may help explain the elevated crime levels. White Rock Lake, East Lover’s Lane, and East Mockingbird Lane all lie within the Northeast Division’s boundaries.
7. Central Division
Downtown Dallas is in the Central Division and experienced the highest number of reported crimes in 2024. Approximately 16,000 reports of property and personal crimes were received. In addition to downtown, the Central Division also includes the Fair Park, Lakewood, and Oak Lawn neighborhoods.
